Berry Season on The Mountain

Naturally sweet and packed with nutrients, berries are a welcome treat to any diet. Berries can be added to cereal, blended with a smoothie or they can be turned into aBerries savoury component for any meat dish.

Choosing berries:

While most berries are available year round, June to September is the time to enjoy berries at their best. For the best berries, look for local farms that pick them fresh or allow you to pick your own. The healthiest berries will be found on organic farms that don't use chemical pesticides. When you buy berries in a store, look for ripe, colorful, yet firm bodies, with no sign of mold or mushy spots.

Note on pesticides: Conventionally grown strawberries, and to a lesser extent raspberries, tend to have more pesticides than other fruits and vegetables. At Coastal Trek we choose to use local, organic berries.

Health properties:

Berries are a source of vitamins and phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are components of fruits or vegetables that may help to prevent diseases. For instance, cranberries and blueberries contain a substance they may help prevent or treat painful bladder infections. Extracts from blueberries and strawberries have been shown to have anti-cancer properties in laboratory settings. Dark-colored berries contain powerful antioxidants, which may help to slow down the aging process.
Berries are also rich in many vitamins and minerals, including calcium, magnesium and zinc.

Delicious Berries you can find easily on the property at Coastal Trek Resort include:

Salmon Berry
Dwarf Himalayan Blackberry
Red and Black Huckleberry
Wild Strawberry (unbelievably good!)
